Solitude, a portrayal of Nanzen Temple in Kyoto, demonstrates a change of the artist’s painting style as he received influence from the Tokyo painters’ community. An ink landscape, it has a texture made with the “momigami” (paper kneading) technique of the “Ninhonga” (Japanese-style) painting genre. The brushwork is wild and all colors are replaced by shades of ink. This is a daring work that breaks away from old ideas while showing innovative attempts. The artist did not make other ink paintings with a similar style afterwards. This makes Solitude a one-and-only masterpiece.
