Somoksobok is a craft brand that uses Korea’s unique mother-of-pearl technique called tabalbeop (a method of cracking shells by tapping them with a chisel to attach them to a flat surface) to inscribe various patterns in wood. The Native Freshwater Fish series decorated ordinary objects including trays with patterns of Korea’s endangered native freshwater fish such as the black shinner, Korean stumpy bullhead, as well as Kichulchoia brevifasciata, Odontobutis obscura—common Korean bitterling—using mother-of-pearl.
