These instruments are often referred to as Xylophones, but that’s
not very accurate. Xylophone has become generic terminology used for musical instruments
that involve striking bars with mallets, irrespective of the materials they're made from. However,
in reality, Xylophones are only those made of wood. The others made of aluminium and brass
are called metallophones, while those made of stone are called lithophones. Among the
differences in them is the sound produced – some are more ringing, others are more muffled.
This sound varies because of the materials they are made from, leading to a different timbre.
