To focus the view when walking down the south stairway into the lower garden, a double row of Armstrong maples, under-planted with artic willow and Annabelle hydrangeas, creates a beautiful alley leading to Lake Michigan. A statue of Ceres — the Roman goddess of agriculture — is located at the southwest corner. The Art Museum Garden Club donated a statue of Ceres to Villa Terrace in the 1970s. It was damaged and later replaced with the current statue, which was carved in Italy.
