Born in Sellersville, Pennsylvania, in 1884, Walter Emerson Baum is unique in being the only prominent artist of the Pennsylvania impressionist group who was native to Bucks County. Through the mid-1930s Baum painted views of the Pennsylvania countryside, working swiftly with thick, vigorous brushwork. By the late 1930s he began painting industrial urban scenes with a muted palette and expressionistic brushwork.
