South Brisbane, Australia

A patriotic souvenir featuring imagery that celebrates the part played by Australian and New Zealand forces in the First World War. Depicted centrally on the white cotton cloth is the Gallipoli landing, with troops disembarking on the shore of Anzac Cove. Printed on one side only, the four corners of the cloth depict port and starboard views of HMAS Sydney and SMS Emden. Australia’s first naval victory is depicted by an illustration of ‘the scrap heap’ – Emden after its encounter with Sydney off the Cocos Keeling Islands. Also prominent are the various flags of the Allies - the Australian Red Ensign on the left, the New Zealand flag on the right, and flags of Russia, France, Great Britain, Belgium, Serbia and Italy.
