The central emblem represents the Ark of the covenant, an image connected with the theme of God's inscrutability. All the books painted in this span are closed, while the inscriptions insist on how convenient and suitable Silence is before an "infinitum ignotum" which men cannot fully understand, but only respect. The Holy Ark was the most sacred thing in Israel's religious tradition, for it shew God's presence among his people.
