Conjunto Arqueológico de Cástulo

Conjunto Arqueológico de Cástulo
Linares (Jaén), Spain

Bronze winged sphinx with a Pschent Crown lying down on a rectangular plate, and the bottom is covered in indentations .

According to Jimenez Avila this object would have been made in a Phoenician South Peninsular workshop like the Thymiaterium documented in the same place, the tomb of the Higuerones. They would be part of a ritual set.

The Sphinx would be the handle of a libanotrix, a box containing incense to be burned in the thymiaterium and it´s purpose is to maintain the sacredness of the substances for the ceremony.
