This pony-size Spider Phaeton belonged to young Helen Clay Frick. Helen learned to ride and drive at an early age, and in the 1890s, she was given a pair of ponies named Countess and Violet. She fondly recalled driving her “stylish and much loved” ponies through Pittsburgh’s Schenley and Highland Parks and along Beechwood Boulevard. A family photograph shows Helen with the reins of Countess and Violet in a similar carriage to this pony-size Spider Phaeton.
