The Salzmünde Group from the Middle Elbe-Saale Region possessed axes that appear to be prestige objects. They are one of the Funnel Beaker cultures of the 4th millennium BC, who are known for megalithic graves and for pottery with elaborate decorative encrusted patterns. The meaning of the patterns carved into the polished surfaces of the Salzmünde ornamental axes is a mystery. Some researchers believe them to be the symbols of an astronomical calendar. (AHo)
