Sport Club de Penafiel was founded on 4/17/1923. In 1943 it merged as União Desportiva Penafielense (founded in 1933), giving rise to Club Desportivo de Penafiel (1943-1949). In 1951, after two years of absence of a sports club that represented the city, FC Penafiel emerged. The colors (red and black) and the emblem (the shield with the eagle with the ball at its foot) that it adopted are those of the former Sport Clube de Penafiel.
