The Maasai Mara is a world renowned for its rich wildlife and scenic landscape. One afternoon in the month of January 2019 in the Mara, a group of Zebras came to drink water from a river. The lead stallion started to cross the river, forcing his herd to follow him. Without warning there was a loud distress call and a cloud of dust rose from the herd. It was a leopard that has taken a young foal by the throat as it crossed the river. The mother Zebra rushed to the rescue of her young and warded off the predator. Sadly, the damage had been done as the leopard had punctured the jugular of the foal. The mare watched sadly as the life of her precious young one ebbed away.
This piece was translated from a picture taken at the scene on that day at the Masai Mara. This episode, though sad has brought joy to the five women at Langata Women’s Prison – Anne, Mwende, Rebecca, Christine and Nthenya -who rendered the cross stitch version of this amazing story in just three weeks.
