Since 1969 – the year he debuted with the photographic installation Environnement – Mario Cresci has developed a discourse that privileges the critical and self-reflexive investigation of photography. Through continuous “verifications” his experiments have been driven by the curiosity to investigate the ambiguities of visual processes and any perceptive experience.
In the images captured for "atlante italiano 003", commissioned by the MAXXI to record the changes, processes of transformation and new aesthetic of the Italian landscape, Cresci confronted the everyday, positioning his research between the imagined and the experienced, between art and life: “…photography can provoke a new awareness, decongesting our gaze after having provoked its congestion”.
