The painting was commissioned by the Theatine fathers of St. Vincent church in Piacenza and it represents the episode in which St. Charles Borromeo visits the Lazaret to give the sick the comfort of sacraments. It resumes the iconography of a well-known painting of that period by Ludovico Carracci, made for the abbey of Nonantola.
