The name of Sremska Mitrovica comes from the name of the ancient town of Sirmium and of St. Demetrius, the patron saint of the modern city. However, the cult of this saint dates back to the time of the martydom of the first Christians in Sirmium at the beginning of the 4th century. The remains of the Basilica of St. Demetrius which are presented in the basement of the modern buiding remind us of the strong Christian tradition of the ancient town. Its construction dates back to the first half of the 5th century.
