The subject matter of this small sculpture comes from the Gospel of Matthew (1:20) and describes the moment an angel appears to St. Joseph while he is asleep. The angel tells him the miraculous conception of Jesus according to divine purposes. The tinted varnish of this figure recalls the Chinese-lacquer technique, achieving a similar glossy effect.
