The first representations of archangels in vice-regal America date from the sixteenth century. This sculpture of St. Michael shows him raising a sword and pressing his foot over the demon’s body. It is a scene that comes from the book of Revelation in the New Testament. The delicate carving of the wood and bright flesh painting were characteristics of Quito's workshops.
