The most outstanding Central European painter of his age, Franz Anton Maulbertsch created a considerable portion of his work in Hungary. He painted innumerable frescoes and altar pictures on Hungarian commission from the early murals in the parish church of Sümeg (1757-1758) to the infinished decoration of Szombathely cathedral, which provide ample ground to review the change in his style from capricious rococo through visionary painting to classicizing late baroque.
