Stag beetle

National Institute of Biological Resources

National Institute of Biological Resources
Incheon, South Korea

The male stag beetles jaws were previously thought to be antlers as they resemble the antlers of a stag.

Males range from  27-51mm in body length, with a large jaw of 7-22mm. Females  are around 25-40mm long.

The back of the head is very  wide and the body is a glossy reddish-brown or blackish-brown. The mandibles are thick and strong. Males can be large or small - large individuals tend to have a stronger jaw, and smaller individuals have a slightly stretched, broad shape. Females are darker in color than the males, and are covered with fine golden hairs. The larvae live in humid places and old oak trees. It takes 2-3 years for a larva to become an adult. Adult insects can be seen from June to September and gather around the sap of oak trees. They are found all over Korea, Russia, Japan, and China.
