Born and raised in Sheffield, La Dell was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Art under the guidance of John Nash in 1935. Following this, La Dell served as an official war artist in the Second World War, working on public murals and camouflage.
In 1948, La Dell returned to the Royal College as head of the Department of Lithography, where he would remain until his death.
