Wilhelm Wagenfeld, the leading designer for the Bauhaus in Germany, advocated the basic principles of the Bauhaus curriculum, which instructed students to design functional, simple, inexpensive and beautiful works that could be industrially produced and financially affordable to a growing middle class. Wagenfeld's vision elevates this lamp's materials, including the nickel-plated tubing and globe, which were easily obtainable at the local hardware store. The white glass globe seems suspended in space, and the undecorated white and silver of the glass and metal enhance this effect. This lamp is the only example of this model known to have been completed by the Metallwerkstatt des Staatlichen Bauhauses.
