The horned sea star, or Protoreaster nodosus, is an opportunistic carnivore that preys on organisms living on the seabed, such as corals and sponges.
Horned sea stars live in the warm, shallow waters of the Indo-Pacific region, and are at home among sandy and muddy areas of seafloor, and seagrass meadows.
They can grow to 30cm in diameter, and normally have 5 arms, but four- and six-armed specimens have also been found.
