(Daytime) Samyan is an old community in the heart of Bangkok and is well known among Chulalongkorn University’s students and staff. Located at the intersection of Rama IV Road and Phayathai Road, Samyan was originally a small community with wooden shophouses, but when Thai people of Chinese descent from Yaowarat moved into the area, the community expanded with new commercial buildings, shops, business offices, and markets. The area is busy since there are leading educational institutes nearby such as Chulalongkorn University and Triam Udom Suksa School. The market at the center of the community has been remodeled from time to time. In 1965, it was upgraded into a standard fresh market named Samyan market, surrounded by shophouses, residences, cinemas, and language schools, and in 1987, the Office of Property Management of Chulalongkorn University reorganized the market to conform to the changes of the new era. The Chinese-Thai people in the Samyan area still hold the beliefs in auspicious things and Feng Shui, which they believe can bring goodness to their lives and business.
