Statue of lactating Ísis

Museu Nacional

Museu Nacional
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The goddess Isis protects the home and family. Here she is depicted nursing her divine son, the god Horus, in the form of a royal prince. The images of Isis, made in bronze, were very popular in the periods leading up to the arrival of Christianity in Egypt, and may have originated the images that represent the Virgin Mary.
