Unlike the extra-temporal representations of the Old Kingdom, the art of the Middle Kingdom is characterized by a strong narrative quality and individualization of the portraits. The image of the ruler in the statue of the pharaoh Amenemhet III (19th cent. BC) is most commanding. The tightly pursed lips and firm chin suggest energy and will-power. The face with its narrow eyes and prominent cheekbones is carefully worked.
