The statue of William Wilberforce stands in the garden of the Wilberforce House Museum, the house where he was born. It was created in 1883-4 by the local sculptor William Day Keyworth junior. It was originally placed in City Hall and was moved to its present position in 1912.

Wilberforce's family were wealthy Hull merchants. He became a politician and was a prominent voice in Parliament calling for the end of the slave trade.
