Steinway & Sons

James Madison's Montpelier

James Madison's Montpelier
Montpelier Station, United States

Family history states that this Steinway & Sons Upright piano was a gift from William duPont to his wife Annie in December 1893. The piano was used at Bellvue, the duPont’s estate in Wilmington, Delaware, and was later moved to Montpelier with the family. The piano features a custom Herts Brothers’ Empire-style mahogany case with ormolu capitals, paw feet, and a gathered silk roundel and semi-roundel. Isaac and Benjamin Herts were prominent furniture and interior designers who won the highest award for furniture design at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
