Steneosaurus is a representative of the marine crocodiles, which had a worldwide distribution during the Jurassic period between 185 to 140 million years ago. Many forms resembled the modern gavials. Steneosaurus had a long, narrow snout that was ideally suited for catching fish. Contrary to later marine crocodiles, it was still able to go on land, where it probably laid eggs in the sand on the beach, similar to the sea turtles.
