Barredo is one of the districts where features of medieval Porto can still be traced in the way it is attuned to the city’s intricate topography. The Ribeira/Barredo Rennovation Project together with the Sé (Cathedral) District Pilot Project (1993), both under the remit of the Commission for Urban Regeneration of the Ribeira / Barredo Area (CRUARB), was vital for the candidacy of Porto’s Historic Centre to UNESCO, which led to its inclusion in the Cultural Heritage of Humanity List (1996).
