Gertrud Staats was the most important woman painter at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries in Lower Silesia. She began her professional painting studies with Adolf Dressler, another extremely important figure of the Wrocław art scene. She painted mainly landscapes and her style oscillated from romantic realism through impressionism to moderate expressionism. She loved working outdoors and she traveled often. Unfortunately, health and financial problems meant that after World War I, the trips stopped and Saats began to paint the views of her garden and floral composition. The presented image heralds this period in the artist's career.
