Still Life with Apples and Pears

The fruit in Koch’s painting looks much like the fruit in 17th-century still lifes. Or is there more to it? The apples and pears are by no means perfect, and set against the menacing background they are even a little unreal. Koch was a magical realist: his reality was ‘possible, but not probable’.
