Chester Beatty

Chester Beatty

The first Christian martyr, Stephen, is generally depicted as a young, beardless man with a tonsure and deacon’s vestments. He was accused of blasphemy by the Jewish authorities and subsequently stoned to death. The figures in the margins also participate in the main story, gathering stones to throw at the saint.
