Balamand, Lebanon

A gas lantern composed of a rounded fount with a flat base, a pear-shaped clear glass chimney and a ventilation cap. The fount and cap are joined by a rounded rectangle hoop, topped with a thin hanger. Around this hoop rest 3 superposed ribs that cage the chimney. A knob opens the fount cap to fill in the gas, which feeds the wick held in the burner. The chimney is embossed with the manufacturer's mark: "Feuerh, Made in Germany", and rests on the burner plate. The burning intensity is controlled by an adjustment knob protruding from the fount neck. . Practical and easily transportable, this lamp was widely distributed in Lebanon, particularly among fishermen who used it to light their night outings at sea. Its flame was protected from the wind thanks to its caged curved chimney. In recent years, it has been replaced on boats by lighting powered by car batteries, but it continues to be used in homes. For cleaning and maintenance, the ensemble was taken apart by removing the cage ribbings.
