A joint venture between RCA and Story & Clark pianos created this stunning example of the world's first electric piano. The unique body of the 1939 Storytone was developed by industrial designer John Vassos. Rather than a conventional soundboard to self-amplify the resonating strings, a magnetic pickup collects the string vibrations and amplifies them electronically. The bench contains both an AM radio receiver and a turntable, allowing these music sources to play along with the piano through the Storytone's dual loudspeakers.
