The calafati were artisans dedicated to the construction and repair of fishing boats, the typical "bisse" or flat gondolas, and the large transport boats. Centers renowned for this activity were Torri and Castelletto, whose calafati were specialized in the construction of boats, while Riva, Desenzano and Malcesine were mainly assembly sites.
