STS093-347-027 (23-27 July 1999) ---
Astronauts Steven A. Hawley (left) and
Michel Tognini, mission specialists, are pictured with the Southwest Ultraviolet Imaging System (SWUIS) on the middeck of the Space Shuttle Columbia. SWUIS was
used during the mission to image planets and other solar system bodies in order to explore their atmospheres and surfaces in ultraviolet (UV) region of the spectrum, which astronomers value for diagnostic work. Tognini represents the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales
(CNES) of France.
