Constance Markievicz was second in command to Commandant Michael Mallin with the Irish Citizen Army contingent who fought initially in St. Stephen's Green, and then in the College of Surgeons, until their surrender on Sunday, 30 April 1916.

Constance was initially sentenced to death, but that sentence was commuted and she was imprisoned at Aylesbury Jail in England. Released in June 1917, Constance successfully stood as a Sinn Féin candidate in the 1918 general election, and so became the first woman ever elected to the British House of Commons. However Constance, like all the other Sinn Féin MPs, did not take her seat.
