This photograph of the Royal Australian Navy submarine AE2 is the same as image H11559 in the Australian War Memorial collection. However the background in this image has been changed, with the painting out of another submarine alongside it (almost definitely AE1) and what appears to be Cockatoo Island dockyards in the War Memorial image. This was probably done for commerical reasons - at the start of WWI images of the new Australian navy fleet were popular souvenir items.

- Significance: The RAN submarine AE2 was attached to the British squadron campaign in Gallipoli during World War I. Dublin-born commanding officer Henry Hugh Gordon Dacre Stoker was appointed commanding officer of AE2 in 1913 and the crew was a mix of Royal Navy and Royal Australian Navy. Having successfully penetrated the Dardanelles, AE2 was sunk north of Marmara Island and the crew captured. Their success stands as one of the RAN's great deeds of WWI.
