Sun Obelisk was created in 1984 by artist Dale Eldred, longtime chair of the sculpture department at the Kansas City Art Institute, known for his site-specific light-based sculptures. "I want the sculptures to remind us all," he said, "that our lives are inextricably linked to light, and that our universe is in constant motion." With "Sun Obelisk", he utilized the sculpture's prominent location along the Maumee river to explore the passage of time through light. The sculpture became part of an important backdrop to many events at Promenade Park in the ensuing years, and today remains a towering figure amongst more recent updates to the layout of the site and its integration into the Glass City Riverwalk.
