Just in time for the 20th anniversary of the GDR on October 7, 1969, the new landmark was to be inaugurated, the television tower on Berlin's Alexanderplatz. And indeed: on October 3, the festive opening took place with great pomp. As the first guest, the Chairman of the State Council Walter Ulbricht (1893-1973) received the only golden "plaque of honor" over coffee and cake in the circle of his political squad. In the following weeks, the recently completed medal was distributed in a few silver and countless bronze specimens to deserving employees.
