Ganesh Pyne, born in Calcutta (now Kolkata) reveals in his work his vision of life and brings forth the paranormal and unfathomable world of shadows. His works are a unique juxtaposition of dreams that with a blink of an eye turn to nightmares, life blossoms even as death seems to triumph.

Pyne is a master in handling tempera, uses textures to generate curiosity with the use of delicate cross hatchings and the slight discharge of pigment. His work is most importantly characterized by the stiff, angular figuration to counter the soft characteristics of the medium.

In this painting some motifs of death, have been represented through stones, bones and rotting wood and an outline of a boat possibly signifies a mysterious journey into the unknown. A sense of menace and an air of decay invades the picture plane. This is evident by the dark spots blemishing the surfaces and in the skeletal form of the figures, however, life blooms and regenerates in the form of vegetation.
