Lake Kussharo is the largest caldera lake in Japan located within the Kussharo Caldera, which was formed by a major eruption some 130,000 to 100,000 years ago. In winter, the lake freezes over, but geothermal heat melts the ice, attracting 400 to 500 swans every year.
