  • Description: From the beginning of the 20th century, Dufy devoted himself to other activities than painting, such as engraving, decorating, designing fabrics for upholstery and fashion, as well as furniture-making, besides designing sets for theatre and costumes for ballet, multiple activities that earned him a comfortable living, as well as a well-deserved fame. Around 1928, Dufy also devoted his time to making pottery, an activity that he had engaged in previously on one occasion in 1924, as this excellent piece demonstrates. The joy of living, which was so characteristic of Raoul Dufy’s art, is clearly expressed through the decoration of this pot, a sophisticated piece in which the massive and expressive rosy-coloured women swimmers, peculiarly reminiscent of fauvism, seem to float across the surface, although their forms are given in contrasting outlines of great graphic agility on a uniform black background.
