Tobacco and Salt Museum
Sumida, Japan

This tobacco tray belonged to the Kishu-Tokugawa family. Its surface is gorgeously decorated with gold powder, and some plants and flowers are depicted in maki-e. On the handle of the tray, karakusa (arabesque) pattern can be seen. The leaves of wild ginger, which is a symbol of the House of Tokugawa, are engraved on the containers placed on the center.
