Sumida, Japan

This is a tobacco pouch made of a burl of zelkova wood. This pouch shows sophisticated maki-e technique. The pouch is decorated with leaves of paulownia in gold maki-e, although applying maki-e directly to uneven material requires highly skilled craftsmanship. On kiseruzutsu (Japanese pipe case), a ladybird decorated with red lacquer can be seen.
