Tobacco and Salt Museum
Sumida, Japan

This tobacco pouch is made of Indian saraça. The saraça was brought to Japan by the Dutch-Japanese trade in the Edo period. On kiseruzutsu (Japanese pipe case) is ardisia depicted in maki-e. The fitting metal has the form of hagoita (a battledore used for a traditional Japanese New Year game). Ardisia and hagoita are the symbols of New Year in Japan. Looking closely at the hagoita, persons wearing traditional costume can be seen.
