Table

This table is one of the few extant pieces of furniture owned by Nelly and James Madison Sr. It was likely brought from Mount Pleasant to Montpelier upon construction of the new dwelling house ca. 1765. James Madison told his great-nephew Col. John Willis that he recalled carrying furniture as a teenager from Mount Pleasant to Montpelier during this period. Made with walnut, the legs have the cabriole or pad feet of the Queen Anne style, but the maker did not fully embrace the style and used straight legs rather than the flared legs seen in more sophisticated pieces.
