The banner, ‘Spiorad Boireannaich Uibhist An-dè, An-diugh ’s A-màireach’ ('Spirit of Uist Women Past, Present and Future') celebrates the strong spirit of the women of Uist, rooted in Gaelic culture and the beautiful islands themselves. Inspired by the Suffragette’s handkerchief from Holloway prison, signatures of ordinary yet extraordinary Uist women were gathered and embroidered onto the banner. Names will be added, including notable women of the past, to attached streamers as an ongoing process. Hand stitching together connected participants with their forebears and forged new friendships in the present. The group’s hope is that young women will continue to be inspired in creating the Uist community of the future.

The arts and heritage centre for Uists. Throughout the year, they hold visual art exhibitions, poetry and literary event, music events and small festivals. They also have an award winning museum and regularly work with local and international artists, academics and writers.

Deirdre Nelson is an Irish artist/designer based in Glasgow. Her nomadic nature and interest in communities have allowed her to develop work for exhibition and on residencies in both the UK and Australia . Research, humour and craft technique contribute to her projects which deal with current social and environmental issues.
