Thomas Janvier's detailed history of the settlement of New York, was published by Harper's over the summer of 1893. Like other histories of the period, Janvier described the chronology of the settlement, the changing names of the streets, and highlights that make the history interesting. As the tailpiece illustration for this first segment of the story, Howard Pyle created a detailed scene of the Dutch West India Company leaving the settlement of Fort Amsterdam as the English took possession on September 8, 1664. Leading the Dutch forces out is Governor Stuyvesant with his peg-leg and his head bent in what Janvier described as an "air of dejection."
