The absence of green areas within the walled city, after the opening of Flores Street (1521-1525) and the destruction of the large cultivation area on the valley of the Vila river, led King Filipe II to create, in 1611, a wide avenue, now known as Cordoaria. The proximity of the Courthouse and the Relação Prison was crucial to the royal decision of building a geometric and rational garden, accessible through the Taipas and the Dr. Barbosa de Castro streets.
